DRILLER KILLER E2 is a tribute by artist Vanessa Scully to the 1979 video nasty classic 'Driller Killer' directed by Abel Ferrara. Set in London’s coolest postcode - the cast of local artists and gallerists play extensions of themselves, blurring the boundaries between reality and fiction. Reno is not so different to the typical emerging artist residing in E2. He is creatively rich but economically poor trying to make his mark in a competitive, abundant and ever expanding art world. The pressures of urban living , a nagging girlfriend, an unsupportive gallerist and sharehouse living become too overwhelming for a painter looking to get ahead, ‘Nobody said life would be pretty’. DRILLER KILLER E2 translation

TRANSLATION OF PRACTISE

2 Formal sculptural works made in response to the themes in Driller Killer E2 for BA Fine Art, yr 3 interim show, January 2012.
These included a drill hole made directly into the gallery wall with a video of the drill hole being made. 5 minute AVI file on a loop.
The second work was a scaled (1:5) drill bit in the form of a plinth, painted hot ‘forever 21’ pink (1m x10 cm). A 5mm piece of hibiscus pink plastic was sitting on top of the plinth with a drill hole inserted.
A third work which I was developing, yet did not show for exhibition was a drill bit which I had cast in Bronze (images below).

The forms chosen for the work imitated the materials used in the fashion and art world to frame objects of desire and thus create added value. These things are brought up in the film through dialogue at private views in East London.
